| Flowering vines. There is hope. Please visit our sponsors. A taste of the old south... this is the primary appeal of Muscadine vine for many herbalists and garden aficionados today. Many modern day architects and landscapers try their best to study and implement designs patterned after southern homes before the turn of the 20th century. These vines add to the time traveling illusion of returning to more innocent times. There are many varieties of this type of vine, but basically Muscadine can be broken down into two general classifications: the perfect flowered types, where the vines bear male and female flower parts; and the pistillate types, where the vines bear only female flower parts. Of the first group belong vines such as Carlos, Cowart, Doreen, Nesbitt, Tara, and Southern Home. Of the second group belong vines such as Fry, Darlene, Sugargate, Black Beauty, Supreme, Summit, and Scarlet. Regardless of their varieties, however, Muscadine vine should be planted in well-drained areas where there is an abundance of sunlight. These are the conditions that would guarantee the highest fruit and flower production. Also, it is recommended that these vines be separated from other plants by at least two meters. Not only will their stems threaten to cling to other plants (and they could grow quite fast at that), but they are voracious feeders and will most definitely compete with other nearby plants for the soil's nutrients. A Muscadine vine is a very hardy plant. They could live for as much as 7 to 8 years, though they reach their peak at 3 years. For the first 3 years, proper and diligent care is required from the gardener. Application of fertilizer (ammonium nitrate) is necessary, at least once every quarter. The right amount of water should be given the vine. They are drought-resistant, and actually prefer little irrigation. A Muscadine vine is perfect for beginners to plants of this kind. They are not difficult to work with, and they could basically grow. |
